Tim Mikkelsen has been awarded Life Membership of the Hire Industry Association of New Zealand. The presentation took place at the Hire Excellence Awards Dinner in Rotorua last Thursday, 5th July 2017.

Tim has been involved in the Hire Industry from the age of five years when in 1969 his father purchased a small hire company in Palmerston North, employing two people. He worked for the family business on and off over the years, after school and during the holidays, but started his in earnest after returning from his OE in 1990.

The family business was sold in 1993 which at that point in time ran two separate divisions (party hire and general hire) and employed a staff of twelve. Tim left and began working for one the then national corporate hire companies for three years, but really wanted to own his own business.

Tim purchased his very own hire company in December of 1999. He has grown the business from a small one-man operation with a limited range of plant, to a staff of five including himself, hiring anything from portable toilets to champagne flutes!

Tim is married to Penny and they have four children. Tim is a Member and Past President of his district Rotary Club, and is a highly regarded businessman within his community.

His desire to learn and willingness to contribute saw him stand for election as HIANZ Zone 2 representative in 2006 serving 4 years on the HIANZ board before agreeing to stand for HIANZ President in 2010.

Tim is passionate about the Hire Industry. He has been on the executive board of the Hire Industry Association of New Zealand for an astonishing 12 years!

Thursday's surprise presentation was a very special moment when Tim was recognised for his extraordinary contributions to the Association and Hire Industry.

    Greetings from the Kapiti Coast

As we come to the end of a brilliant summer, I hope your businesses benefited with a flurry of activity the fine weather bestowed upon us. I anticipate another productive year and am pleased to provide you with an update of key events and initiatives being undertaken by the Association.

This year the Hire Industry Association of New Zealand celebrates its 40th anniversary. What better way to mark this significant milestone than by holding a Reunion to reconnect past and present members at this year’s 2018 conference. It will give us all the opportunity to meet up with some founding members and associates that have been part of the hire industry over the past 40 years.

Conference is shaping up to be a wonderful event. Guest speakers include Gilbert Enoka (All Blacks Manager) and Sir Graham Henry – no introduction needed there. We have invited members from the Global Rental Alliance, and along with our loyal Australian supporters we are confident of a respectable international contingent. Supplier interest is very strong this year with trade display booths almost fully booked.

We have a dedicated website for conference 2018 which can be accessed through the HIANZ website. Here you will find all the information you need to complete your registration and book accommodation. Check it out –

The HIANZ board have invested an enormous amount of time and energy into the strategic direction of the Association. Amongst other initiatives we are constantly looking at ways to increase membership, member benefits and grow a financially robust portfolio.

Now in our 40th year it is equally important to reflect and appreciate the commitment and hard work of those who have contribute to the success of the Association, and subsequently the Hire Industry as a whole. That is why as part of conference 2018 we are encouraging past members of HIANZ to register for all or part of the conference. Past members and delegates are invited to register for a reunion luncheon being held on the 4th July at Conference. This will be an occasion for those involved to catch up with old friends, acknowledge the past and look the future of our industry. If you are interested in attending the luncheon or are still in contact with past members who would like to attend, please go to the conference website and register.

Membership diversity and growth is always a focus of the board, who have recently worked alongside the NZFIA (New Zealand Forklift Industry Association) to forge an alliance so we can better represent and support the businesses within this industry sector. The involvement of the NZFIA will increase the collective voice of the industry, further standardise industry best practices and bring efficiencies to both organisations in respect of HR and administrative resources.

Other key initiatives currently undertaken include a planned upgrade to the HIANZ website, development of “Instruction for Use library” and intentions to lobby for change to the Personal Properties Securities Act to replicate what was achieved recently in Australia. We look forward to updating members with progress and a presentation highlighting our work will also be made at the AGM during conference.

I am looking forward to catching up with as many of you as possible in July!

    Kind regards,

    Tim Mikkelsen

The Global Rental Alliance (GRA) recently held its 16th annual meeting at The Rental Show® 2018 in New Orleans.

As part of the meeting, GRA welcomed back the Brazilian Rental Association (ANALOC) as a member, joining the Canadian Rental Association (CRA); European Rental Association (ERA), Belgium; Hire Association Europe (HAE), United Kingdom; Hire Industry Association of New Zealand (HIANZ); Hire and Rental Industry Association Ltd. (HRIA), Australia; Japan Construction Rental Association (JCRA), Japan; and American Rental Association (ARA), U.S.

“The Global Rental Alliance allows industry and association representatives from around the world to discuss common issues that impact rental/hire operators and share solutions that are having a positive impact,” said Tony Conant, ARA CEO. “We are always looking to add global members who are interested in sharing their geography’s industry data and advancing the rental industry.”

The meeting agenda included the latest review of the global survey initiative of the GRA, which estimates fiscal year 2016 combined rental revenue among the GRA associations of US$96.96 billion. This figure represents a 6 percent increase over 2015 rental revenues, as calculated by IHS Markit™ on behalf of the group.

The GRA members also agreed to start projecting the recent year’s rental revenue and other key figures at their summer meeting, and will publish preliminary 2017 figures in August.

Discussion was held among the associations on the economic forecast for their countries through 2018 and it appears that the economies of all GRA members are healthy and that operators expect a very good year.

Priorities and member initiatives of the associations were shared for the benefit of the group, as well as trends and industry developments. Among the topics discussed were global technology trends and workforce development issues, including the promotion of women and minorities in rental and efforts to engage young professionals. Technology is the one area that cuts across industry segments, geographies and cultures to improve business performance. It has improved safety, operational efficiency and the customer experience, and technology will continue to reshape the industry. The GRA is looking to add technology to its standing discussion agenda and will add a special segment to next year’s program in Anaheim, Calif.

The group discussed their objectives for 2018-2019, as well as conference dates and schedules for their respective associations. These dates are available on the GRA website,

A midyear webinar meeting for GRA will be held and is planned for August 2018. The next annual meeting with be at The Rental Show 2019 in Anaheim.

The purpose of the Global Rental Alliance is to increase the profile of equipment rental/hire worldwide. It is a partnership of rental associations from around the developed world that meets semi-annually and shares information on program initiatives throughout the year.

The unity of this group has brought about an increased awareness of overall priorities internationally, adding to the strategic outlook and resources of each rental member association.

    About the Global Rental Alliance

The Global Rental Alliance consists of eight independent equipment rental/hire trade associations that have joined together to increase the understanding and concept of equipment rental worldwide. They are: The Brazilian Rental Association (ANALOC); Canadian Rental Association (CRA); European Rental Association (ERA); Hire Association Europe, U.K. (HAE); Hire and Rental Industry Association Ltd., Australia (HRIA); Hire Industry Association of New Zealand (HIANZ); Japan Construction Rental Association (JCRA) and American Rental Association (ARA).

HIANZ (Hire Industry Association of New Zealand) has appointed Youngman Richardson & Co Ltd in conjunction with Genie Industries as its principal sponsors for the next three years. “Youngman Richardson has a long history with the association spanning four decades and Genie Industries have been regular participants in association activities. Now, with the additional support from Genie Industries it is great to welcome them both as major supporters,” says HIANZ Chief Executive Phil Tindle. “Given the fact we will be celebrating 40 years as an association in 2018 it is entirely appropriate that as a founding member Youngman Richardson along with Genie Industries will be at the forefront of many of the activities planned over the next 12 months.”

    Global Rental Alliance Meets

August 11, 2017 – The Global Rental Alliance (GRA), made up of seven peer equipment rental associations from throughout the world, held their mid-year meeting via webinar in early-August with participation by association executive staff.

Consistent with their purpose to increase the profile of the industry worldwide and benefit their individual membership, the group discussed approaches to GRA membership expansion, data standardization, rental careers, safety, technology and diversity within the industry for both rental businesses, and with manufacturers. Membership engagement is central to the associations and each is striving to include young professionals in leadership initiatives.

The GRA International Business Leadership Program administered by the ARA Foundation is a key aspect of the GRA program for young professionals. This fall, an Australian rental representative will travel to the United States to participate in this program. This leadership program continues to build awareness of the importance of equipment rental worldwide and the value of networking on a global level.  A U.S. representative traveled to Australia in May for a similar opportunity.

Representatives identified topics for further roundtable discussion at their 16th annual meeting to be held February 22, 2018 at The Rental Show in New Orleans.

The countries shared information regarding their annual conferences, focusing on education/training, new equipment and networking events.

Mike O'Neill was awarded Life Membership of the Hire Industry Association of New Zealand, at the Hire Excellence Awards held in Blenheim on the 25th July 2017.
Mike formerly owned and operated Cambridge Hire. Mike began his commitment to the HIANZ board in 1998 as Zone 2 director. His tenure spanned 11 years until 2009. Mike was instrumental at the time the Association moved from volunteer zone committees to the recruitment of a full time CEO.

Giving freely of his time and with the well-being of the association always front of mind, he, along with the help of a business colleague, ran the financial affairs of the association after losing three CEO’s in a very short space of time. Thanks to his commitment, dedication and optimism, he was a prime mover in assuring the association remained operational and financially viable during those tough times.

"He gave so much time and energy to the association and worked hard to stimulate our industry at every opportunity. All of this while still managing his own hire company in Cambridge", said HIANZ Past President, Wayne Hood.

"Mike's optimism, passion and commitment to the industry over the years has simply been infectious, and it is little wonder that he is held in such high regard amongst our industry peers. Mike has been the “go to” man for industry knowledge and foresight for many years now. I must also acknowledge the support of Mike's wife, Carol. As we all know, it is the support and understanding of those close to us that help people achieve great things", said HIANZ President, Tim Mikkelsen.
